Why Twinstar Lighting Doesn’t Use 3-in-1 LED Chips


Independent RGB LEDs Vs 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 LED

Today’s topic is about LED chips and lighting technology. As many of you know, TWINSTAR uses independent RGB LEDs instead of 3-in-1 LEDs. 

The main reason we use independent RGB LEDs is for better light efficiency. Another important reason is that most 3-in-1 LEDs are made in China, and their reliability doesn’t meet our quality standards. 

A 3-in-1 LED combines red, green, and blue (or sometimes white, red, green, and blue) LED chips into one package. The size of the package is the same as regular individual LEDs, but it packs all the chips into one space so it can be problems for long term use due to heat transfer. 

These types of LEDs are often used for large outdoor advertising signs. In contrast, independent RGB LEDs have a wide range of applications, from interior lighting to agricultural lighting. Because there is such high demand, LED companies invest heavily in improving the performance of RGB LEDs.


Comparison of LED Light Efficiency

We compared the light efficiency of Lite On LED Company's high-quality 3-in-1 LED from Taiwan with the RGB LEDs used by TWINSTAR Light. According to the results, TWINSTAR’s red LED is 1.2 times more efficient, the green LED is 2.8 times more efficient, and the blue LED is 2.6 times more efficient compared to the 3-in-1 LED. While the difference in efficiency was not significant 4 to 5 years ago, the gap has now widened considerably. This is why the latest Twinstar 4.2 generation lights can provide higher brightness with lower power consumption.


Freedom in Spectrum Design

3-in-1 or 4-in-1 LEDs can only be designed with a configuration of white, red, blue, and green LEDs, making it difficult to create the spectrum that plants need. However, by using individual LEDs, it is possible to apply a variety of colored LEDs, allowing for more flexibility in spectrum design and achieving higher PPFD values.

The newly upgraded Twinstar 4.2 version lighting uses six types of colored LEDs, enabling high light efficiency and designing the light energy that plants require. As a result, it also delivers higher PPFD values.
